Morning Prayer Rite II
Prelude to Worship
Opening Collect (standing)
Officiant
God our Father, in your loving providence you have brought us into being to find joy in communion with one another and to know you in our joy. We give you praise and thanks for the communion we share as members of the body of Christ your Son. We give thanks for each member of the body particularly in our own parish community, for friends and strangers, for the ones on the fringes and for those near the center. Mold and shape us, we pray, so that all we say and do reflects your deep love for all your creation, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
Opening Hymn, AAHH-329 (all sing, standing) Holy, Holy, Holy! Lord GOD Almighty!
Opening Sentence (all remain standing) BCP, p. 76
Officiant: I will give you as a light to the nations that my salvation may reach to the end of the earth. Isaiah 49:6b
The Invitatory and Psalter (remain standing)
Officiant: Lord, open our lips.
People: And our mouth shall proclaim your praise.
Officiant and People
Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen. Alleluia.
Venite (all recite together)
Come, let us sing to the Lord;*
Let us shout for joy to the Rock of our salvation.
Let us come before God’s presence with thanksgiving*
and raise to the Lord a shout with psalms.
For you are a great God;*
you are great above all gods.
In your hand are the caverns of the earth,*
and the heights of the hills are yours also.
The sea is yours, for you made it,*
and your hands have molded the dry land.
Come, let us bow down and bend the knee,*
and kneel before the Lord our Maker.
For you are our God,
and we are the people of your pasture and the sheep of your hand.*
Oh, that today we would hearken to your voice!
1 I will give thanks to you, O Lord, with my whole heart; *
before the gods I will sing your praise.
2 I will bow down toward your holy temple
and praise your Name, *
because of your love and faithfulness;
3 For you have glorified your Name *
and your word above all things.
4 When I called, you answered me; *
you increased my strength within me.
5 All the kings of the earth will praise you, O Lord, *
when they have heard the words of your mouth.
6 They will sing of the ways of the Lord, *
that great is the glory of the Lord.
7 Though the Lord be high, he cares for the lowly; *
he perceives the haughty from afar.
8 Though I walk in the midst of trouble, you keep me safe; *
you stretch forth your hand against the fury of my enemies;
your right hand shall save me.
9 The Lord will make good his purpose for me; *
O Lord, your love endures for ever;
do not abandon the works of your hands.
Officiant and People
Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen.
Gospel Acclamation AAHH-396 (all sing, standing) I Surrender All (Verse 1 only)
The Gospel Lesson (seated) Luke 5:1-11
A Reading from the Gospel according to Luke:
Once while Jesus was standing beside the lake of Gennesaret, and the crowd was pressing in on him to hear the word of God, he saw two boats there at the shore of the lake; the fishermen had gone out of them and were washing their nets. He got into one of the boats, the one belonging to Simon, and asked him to put out a little way from the shore. Then he sat down and taught the crowds from the boat. When he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, “Put out into the deep water and let down your nets for a catch.” Simon answered, “Master, we have worked all night long but have caught nothing. Yet if you say so, I will let down the nets.” When they had done this, they caught so many fish that their nets were beginning to break. So they signaled their partners in the other boat to come and help them. And they came and filled both boats, so that they began to sink. But when Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus’ knees, saying, “Go away from me, Lord, for I am a sinful man!” For he and all who were with him were amazed at the catch of fish that they had taken; and so also were James and John, sons of Zebedee, who were partners with Simon. Then Jesus said to Simon, “Do not be afraid; from now on you will be catching people.” When they had brought their boats to shore, they left everything and followed him. [The Gospel of the Lord.]
People Thanks be to God.
Homily (seated) The Rev. Valerie J. Mayo
Rector
The Apostles’ Creed (spoken by all, standing)
I believe in God, the Father almighty,
creator of heaven and earth.
I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord.
He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit
and born of the Virgin Mary.
He suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died, and was buried.
He descended to the dead.
On the third day he rose again.
He ascended into heaven,
and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
He will come again to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the holy catholic Church,
the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body,
and the life everlasting. Amen.

The Commissioning of the Vestry
(Vestry stands; congregation remains seated)
The Examination
The congregation being seated, the Officiant stands in full view of the people. The newly elected and continuing Vestry members stand facing the Officiant.
Officiant
Brothers and Sisters in Christ Jesus, we are all baptized by the one Spirit into one Body, and given gifts for a variety of ministries for the common good. Our purpose is to commission these persons in the Name of God and of this congregation to the special ministry of Members of the Vestry to which they are called.
The Officiant asks the congregation
To the following question, I ask the congregation to respond with a resounding, “We believe they are.”
To the best of your knowledge, are these persons prepared by a commitment to Christ as Lord, by regular attendance at worship, and by the knowledge of their duties, to exercise their ministry to the honor of God, and the well-being of God’s Church?
People We believe they are.
The Officiant asks the Candidates
Officiant You have been called to ministry as Vestry Members in this congregation. Will you, as long as you are engaged in this work, perform it with diligence?
Candidates We will.
Officiant Will you faithfully and reverently execute the duties of your ministry to the honor of God, and the benefit of the members of this congregation?
Candidates We will.
The Declaration and Promise
Officiant I present to you these persons to be admitted to the ministry of Members of the Vestry in this congregation, and ask that they now read together the declaration and promise to which they must attest in order to serve.
Candidates
I do believe the Holy Scriptures of the Old and New Testament to be the Word of God, and to contain all things necessary to salvation; and I do yield my hearty assent and approbation to the doctrines, worship and discipline of The Episcopal Church; and I promise that I will faithfully execute the office of Vestry Member of St. Titus’ Episcopal Church, in Durham, North Carolina, according to my best knowledge and skill.
The Commissioning
Officiant Let us pray. (silence)
Eternal God, the foundation of all wisdom and the source of all courage: Enlighten with your grace the Vestry of this congregation, and so rule their minds, and guide their counsels, that in all things they may seek your glory and promote the mission of your Church; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
In the Name of God and of this congregation, I commission you as Vestry Members in this Parish.
Concluding Collect (prayed together in unison by all)
Officiant and People
O Lord, without whom our labor is lost: We beseech you to prosper all works in your Church undertaken according to your holy will. Grant to your workers a pure intention, a patient faith, sufficient success on earth, and the blessedness of serving you in heaven; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
The Offertory
The congregation remains seated during the singing of the Offertory Anthem and the bringing forth of our monetary gifts.
